Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specific type of superficial, gentle massage that assists the lymphatic system to better move the interstitial fluids and waste products in the body. Using a rythmical flow, the massage follows the direction of the body's lymphatic vessel drainage pattern.  Some people have had actual damage to their lymphatic systems, such as cancer patients that may have had lymph nodes removed.  They sometimes require ongoing lymphatic drainage to prevent the chronic accumulation of excess fluid that can cause serious complications.  Others just enjoy the gentle flow of lymphatic drainage for overall wellness. Lymphatic massage is also quite helpful in reducing post-op swelling following cosmetic surgery.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps to reduce swelling, detoxify the body, enhances the function of the immune system, helps with pain relief from edema and promotes deep relaxation. It may also contribute to breast health by improving circulation and decreasing inflammation.  It is sometimes recommended after certain procedures such as liposuction and tummy tucks to help relieve the post surgical swelling. If you have chronic swelling and/or other chronic medical problems Manual Lymphatic Drainage may be a helpful treatment modality for you.

It can also be helpful for those suffering from autoimmune conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus as well as other autoimmune disease. Some of the benefits include:

  • Reduces Inflammation and Swelling: Autoimmune conditions involve chronic inflammation. MLD helps move excess fluid and inflammatory waste from tissues, which can reduce swelling, joint pain, and stiffness.
  • Eases Fatigue and Brain Fog: By improving circulation and helping the body clear waste products more efficiently, MLD may help lift persistent fatigue and clear "brain fog".
  • Calms the Nervous System: The gentle, rhythmic nature of MLD can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety. Since stress often triggers flare-ups, this calming effect can be a significant benefit.
  • Supports Immune Regulation: Research suggests that lymphatic dysfunction plays a role in autoimmune diseases. While MLD doesn't "stimulate" an already overactive immune system, it helps clear irritants, allowing the immune system to regulate and function more efficiently, potentially reducing the frequency and severity of flare-ups.
